The ball's speed caused it to break through the net

Luckily, the woman has left hospital after the appropriate medical treatment

A baseball fan in Pittsburgh avoided potential death last night after being hit in the back of the head by a foul ball.

The woman was walking back to her seat, when a ball sliced off the bat of a Cubs player, before breaking through the protective net behind home plate, and crashing into her head.

With the average fastball last season pitching at a staggering 92mph, it really puts into perspective just how lucky the woman was to avoid further injury.

The game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs was stopped for 23 minutes as paramedics aided her, before bringing her to hospital.

A statement from the Pirates, who were the home side last night, said the woman underwent medical examinations, and has luckily since left hospital.

“The female fan who was struck by a foul ball during last night’s game was sent via ambulance to the hospital for the appropriate examinations. Thankfully, the fan was released from the hospital following those examinations. We are extremely grateful for this positive outcome,” a statement read.

“The organization is in the process of reaching out to her to show our support. Due to privacy laws, we will not reveal the name of the fan, nor additional details at this time. We wish to thank the PNC Park personnel and fellow fans who were on the scene at the time, as well as the Pittsburgh EMS for their quick response.”
