This week American sports anchor Dale Hansen gave a powerful monologue on air expressing his disapproval in a group of young fans who brought “White Power” placards to a Texas basketball game.
Hansen opened up about his past and how he was raised into an environment in which racial intolerance was the norm and closed off with a war cry, imploring the public to take action to promote positive change and try to end racial prejudices once and for all.
The one black family [my father] knew were good people; all the others he didn’t know, they were the bad people. The ignorance in that reasoning if you think about it long enough will twist your mind and it twisted mine.
Kids have to be taught to hate, and it’s our parents and grandparents and our teachers and coaches too who teach us to hate. Kids become the product of that environment. I was and they are.
