Joe Brolly, look away now.
With no shot clock in high school basketball, time-wasting is inevitable, but not to this extent.
Alabama’s Bibb County got the better of Brookwood High 2-0 recently (that wasn’t a typo), making it the lowest scoring high school basketball game in America since 1977.
With Brookwood having played three games already that week, their coach decided to let them rest, and instructing them to simply throw the ball around gently, and not attempt any scores.
To counter this, Bibb County switched up to a zone defence, and to counter that, Brookwood decided to simply hold the ball and do nothing with it, letting the clock run down.
With Bibb County 2-0 up after a score in the opening seconds of the game, their coach decided to maintain their zone defence at all costs, and allow their opponents stand with the ball in hand unchallenged.
The only action came when Brookwood attempted a couple of unsuccessful potshots at the end of the first and second quarter.
At half time, the Bibb County coach decided to prove just how stubborn man can be, and instructed his players to also stand, motionless with the ball in hand, and force the Brookwood players to actually move. In fairness, his side were winning.
And the tactic worked. Both sides continued the standoff until the final seconds, when a Brookwood played attempted to score a game-winning three-pointer.
He missed, and the rest was history.
