Rumours have finally become reality today with the news that the NFL and Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a ten-year deal to play a minimum of two American football games per season at their new stadium from 2018.

The announcement is another signal that the a London-based NFL  franchise may really be on the cards, something which has been mooted for a long time. Any London based franchise would play a portion of their home fixtures in London with the rest taking place in the States.

Wembley is currently the main venue for NFL matches, with 11 games having been played there since 2007, and it’s expected Tottenham’s new stadium will take over as the main arena for American football when it opens in 2018.

The new stadium will have a capacity of 61,000 and will feature a retractable grass pitch with an artificial surface underneath which will be used for NFL games

According to NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, the partnership will allow the NFL to further grow its support base in England,

“With growing enthusiasm for the NFL in the United Kingdom, we are committed to hosting NFL games in world-class venues and are excited to partner with Tottenham Hotspur to play games at their future stadium.”

“We share a vision and commitment to creating the best experience for our teams, fans and the local community.”

Fans of Spurs should be excited about the fancy stadium that they are being promised in the deal, with a full design said to be unveiled shortly.
