All-Ireland Champions Tipperary have been rewarded for a stellar season with 13 PwC All-Star nominations.
The Premier County claimed their 29th All-Ireland title in July. They produced a dazzling second-half display to blow Cork away at Croke Park.
Cork, the beaten finalists, are also well represented. They have 11 nominees, including veteran Patrick Horgan, who announced his inter-county retirement on Monday.
Meanwhile, the nominees for Hurler of the Year have also been revealed. This award will be decided by a vote of the players themselves.
Three of the championship’s most prolific scorers are in contention. John McGrath of Tipperary struck 7-16 from play plus 2-2 in the final. Jake Morris, also of Tipperary, recorded 0-24. Brian Hayes of Cork finished the season with 5-9.
However, Tipperary captain Ronan Maher, man of the match in the All-Ireland Final, is a surprise omission from the Hurler of the Year shortlist. He is, at least, included among the All-Star nominees.
The Young Hurler of the Year award will likewise be decided by the players. The contenders are Adam English of Limerick and Tipperary pair Robert Doyle and Darragh McCarthy, who scored 1-13 in the final.
A panel of GAA journalists from print, TV, radio and digital media, chaired by GAA president Jarlath Burns, selected the All-Star list. It includes 3 goalkeepers, 18 defenders, 6 midfielders and 18 forwards.
County Breakdown: Tipperary (13), Cork (11), Limerick (7), Kilkenny (6), Dublin (4), Waterford (2), and one each for Galway and Wexford.
“Congratulations to the 45 players who have been shortlisted,” said Burns. “To be included after a pulsating season of hurling is a significant achievement and due recognition for your efforts.”
Finally, the winners will be revealed at the PwC All-Stars gala in Dublin’s RDS on Friday 7 November, which will be broadcast live on RTÉ.
The football nominations will follow on Tuesday morning.
