Seamus Coleman showers praise on the Republic of Ireland supporters at Euro 2016

It's been almost five months since the Republic of Ireland's European dream came to an end in Lyon.

But the echoes of the songs and chants will live long in the memory of all who monitored Martin O'Neill's side's progress through Euro 2016 before their ultimate elimination at the hands of tournament hosts and runners-up France. Just as memorable as the supporters' behaviour was Ireland's heroic victory over Italy who had, at that point, failed to concede a goal in the group stages. And new Irish captain Seamus Coleman has revealed that Ireland's crucial three points against the Azzurri came as a direct result of the energy being injected into the players by the matchless Irish fans in attendance. “They’ve really helped us get results over the years, especially when we played Italy [at Euro 2016] when we needed something out there and we got a massive result that made us qualify out of the group," Coleman told Everton's official website. “The fans travelled to the Euros and made themselves heard and they always behave themselves very well which is important as well when you go away. I’m very proud to play for supporters that are so passionate about their country." Coleman became the proud new owner of Ireland's captain's armband after Robbie Keane's retirement in August. The Everton right back does not take the honour for granted and insists that he will follow the legendary striker's example, but is aware that it will be nigh-on impossible to replicate what Keane did in the green of Ireland. “Taking over from Robbie Keane [as captain] is a massive step, as a kid growing up I always wanted to play for Ireland but to captain the country even tops that. It’s an amazing feeling and a very proud moment," Coleman continued. “You’re not going to replace what Robbie did on the pitch but if I can take even a snippet of his enthusiasm and his pride for his country then I will have done well. He is a very proud Irishman, loved playing for his country and he let the lads know what it meant to pull on that green shirt.
