FAI children’s guide to Euro 2016 may need to revisit a key moment in Irish history

When doing snippets of history for a children's football guide, it may have been wiser to avoid partition completely.

The FAI produced a fantastic Euro 2016 guide for our football-mad youngsters and it is comprehensive, to say the least. There are handy summaries, glossy pictures and interesting facts about each of the 24 countries aiming for Euro glory this summer. Unfortunately, when it comes to the section on Northern Ireland, there is a sizeable mishap about the Irish Civil War and the partition of six northern counties. 'After years of Civil War...' Now, while Ireland did sign the Anglo-Irish Treaty in December 1921, the Civil War that tore the country apart was definitely not going on beforehand. The glitch has been in the FAI children's guide to Euro 2016 for a number of days but was only brought to our attention, this morning, by journalist Damian Mac Con Uldah. Others may argue that Britain were slightly more heavy-handed that merely negotiating to retain the six counties but that's another argument for another day.
