Anthony Stokes refused entry to Celtic’s training ground after Twitter rant

The path is being paved for an exit from Celtic Park.

There were always going to be ramifications for Anthony Stokes' Twitter outburst on Saturday. The Celtic striker took to social media after being left out of his club's 3-1 win over Inverness. His most scathing tweets were:

• 'Buzzing to be brought all the way up to Inverness with the team to sit in the stands today. Lovely weather for it too.'
• 'Who gives a f*** about wages when you’re not playing! It’s about playing and contributing, not picking up a wage.'

The 27-year-old Ireland international subsequently apologised for his Twitter rant, saying his posts were sent in the heat of the moment.

Celtic coach Ronny Deila questioned whether Stokes was, in fact, a team player and was critical of his decision to publicly vent frustrations. Deila commented, "Life is not about punishment. It’s about reacting to your values. I will talk to him about it. On Tuesday, it got worse for Stokes. He was refused entry to the Scottish side's Lennoxtown training complex and was then informed by the club that he was being suspended for two weeks. The player is said to be stunned by the sanction. Only weeks ago Kris Commons escaped suspension for berating the manager after being substituted against Molde. As of 8am this morning, there have been no fresh tweets on stokes' account.
