World Rugby wants more tries and this could be just the ticket.
Lovers of the oval ball will be seeing some new changes rolled out on a trial bases in the coming year that could just stick.
Both the U20 Six Nations and World Championship – among other selected competitions – will feature a new points system that is aimed at encouraging more try-scoring.
The sport’s global governing body has highlighted a number of proposed laws that will be trialed on a temporary basis and they could change the game as we currently know it. And it could also spell bad news for Ireland and the like of their rolling maul.
The points system proposal would award more more points for a try and less for a drop goal and penalty.
It’s all about attacking.
Here are some of the suggestions:
- 6 points for a try.
- 2 points for a penalty goal.
- 2 points for a dropped goal.
- A maul must start moving forward within five seconds or else a scrum will be ordered.
- The hooker may signal to his scrum half that he is ready to receive the ball in the scrum.
- Wheeling the scrum by defending team will be discouraged with award of new scrum from where it ended.
