World Cup winning Springbok fights off six carjackers then drives himself to hospital

Don't mess with a Springbok

Gareth Makim

Hannes Strydom is in hospital after suffering a cracked skull and stab wounds while fending off six carjackers in Pretoria.

The South African lock, a member of the famous 1995 world champions, was attacked on his way home from a gym session and was admitted to an intensive care unit at Groenkloof hospital, where he is in a stable condition.

Former team-mate Hennie le Roux said 49-year-old Strydom ‘managed to fight off six people who attempted the hijacking. He then drove himself to the hospital and was placed in ICU.

‘Hannes, being the person that he is, tried to protect his assets and in the process (got injured). They were throwing rocks through the windscreen and he cracked his skull through his eye socket down towards his mouth. So he had it full frontal, from the face. Let’s hope and pray that he recovers quickly and appropriately.

‘He is starting to show improvement, which we’re very pleased about.’
