Nigel Owens isn’t a man who frightens us most of the time.

The Wales referee seems like he can enjoy the game he’s officiating in, as well as treating the players with respect in a manner that has won him many admirers in and out of the rugby.
But he doesn’t suffer any fools either and he especially is not a fan of trying to be hoodwinked by a Scottish player after minimal contact in tonight’s South Africa-Scotland clash that saw the Springboks win by 34-16.
Stuart Hogg got the slightest of touches from the Springboks forward Tendai Mtawarira in the second half and collapsed in a manner more befitting of Diego Costa than that of a professional rugby player.
Owens wasn’t fooled for a second, and in a clever reference to the venue where the match was behind held-Newcastle United’s home ground St James’s Park – the referee gave Hogg a pretty severe warning.
Owens could have given Hogg a yellow for diving if he so wished but decided the infraction didn’t warrant 10 minutes in the sin-bin.
