VIDEO: Ireland new boy Josh van der Flier finally clears up pronunciation of his name

Radiates confidence

Glad we got that settled.

It has been the debate raging throughout the Six Nations – just how do you pronounce the surname of Leinster’s latest Ireland international.

Fleer or Flyer?

Josh van der Flier clears that up in the fourth and final episode of Leinster’s “The Academy” documentary. The third and final barrel of his surname rhymes with dear, not dryer.

So there.

The 22-year-old Wicklow man also reveals how his Dutch grandparents moved to Ireland in the 1950s to open a, presumably, much-needed radiator factory.

The flanker’s rugby career is no accident either. He started out with Wicklow RFC at the age of FIVE – going along to Under-8s training with his father, despite being able to do very little.

We also learn a little about his housemates Peter Dooley, Tom Daly and Adam Byrne. Some spend too long on the couch, some spend too long in the shower and some spend too long with their girlfriends

But they all love chicken fillets and sweet potato.

Considering he has made his Champions Cup debut this season and was unlucky to be denied a try on his Test debut at Twickenham last Saturday, we are going to go out on a limb and say Van der Flier will soon be able to afford to say goodbye to his housemates and strike out on his own.
