The stakes just got a hell of a lot higher for this weekend’s clash with England

As if the lads needed any more pressure on their shoulders

Sean McMahon

It wasn’t supposed to be like this.

What a difference a week makes.

Before Ireland’s loss to Wales, there was a decent level of confidence surrounding this Irish team.

They had put their championship aspirations back on track with wins over Italy and France and although they expected a tough day at the office against a wounded Wales, they would have expected to overcome Rob Howley’s side, nonetheless.

Unfortunately the performance, which didn’t lack for grit or determination, and the result, just weren’t good enough.

Old-failings with regards to coming away with points after dominating territory reared their ugly heads once again.

Now, all of a sudden, there has been a backlash of sorts and players and management have both been under severe scrutiny ever since.

Ireland have the daunting task of restoring their pride and the confidence of the Irish public in a do or die clash with Eddie Jones’ unwavering English side.

If this wasn’t enough pressure to be heaped upon the Irish players, Saturday could well see them drop in the world rankings, meaning that they will get a much tougher draw for the Rugby World Cup in 2019.

If Ireland lose to England and Wales beat France in Paris, Ireland will drop to fifth and Wales will replace them in fourth.

Unfortunately, this means that Ireland will be pooled against a side in the top seeding group, which could include New Zealand, England, and Australia.
