Ah, Throwback Thursday…
A few weeks ago Devin Toner gave us an insight into what time can do, and today it’s Conor Murray’s turn.
The Munster and Irish scrum half is regarded as one of the best in the world in his position, and I wonder how many people realised the kid they were watching in this Schools Junior Cup game in 2004 (we think) would go on to achieve what he has.
Long before the days of skin-tight, slim-lined jerseys, the average schools rugby player had to wear jerseys around four sizes too big for them. And if it rained, you were goosed, that thing would inflate to about three stone in weight in even light drizzle.
And a relatively baby-faced Murray was wearing just that in this Junior Cup game 10 or 11 years ago, looking like he was on the verge of drowning in a pool of red, blue and black fabric.
Also, grip gloves. GRIP GLOVES! I’ve yet to meet somebody who played rugby in the mid-2000s and didn’t own a pair of these.
Uttery useless, so they were.
