Joe Schmidt has called up Munster prop James Cronin to Ireland’s 36-man Six Nations squad.
The Munster loosehead has been called in as injury cover for provincial teammate Dave Kilcoyne who suffered a knee injury during Munster’s win over Castres on Sunday.
Cronin will join Jack McGrath, Cian Healy, Andrew Porter, John Ryan and Tadhg Furlong as the props in the Ireland squad.
Elsewhere Ulster Rugby have told SporsJOE that Jacob Stockdale sustained a dead leg in yesterday’s defeat to Wasps, dispelling fears that he could be in doubt for Ireland’s Six Nations opener against France in Paris the weekend after next.
Ireland set off for Spain on Monday morning with Schmidt taking his squad away for a pre-Six Nations warm weather training camp.
It is the first time Schmidt has taken his squad overseas for a training camp during his tenure as Ireland coach as the New Zealander looks to bring his squad together for the first time since Ireland’s mini-camp at the end of last month.
Meanwhile Ireland U20 coach Noel McNamara has named his squad for next month’s Six Nations with Leinster centre Tommy O’Brien named as captain.
McNamara has called on 11 players from last year’s team with prop Jordan Duggan, hookers Ronan Kelleher and Diarmuid Barron, back-row Sean Masterson, scrum-half Jonny Stewart, fly-half Conor Dean, centres Angus Curtis, David McCarthy and Tommy O’Brien, and outside backs Mark Keane and Michael Silvester all involved once again at underage level.
Ireland will open their campaign against France in Brive on Friday, February 2, before returning to face Italy in Donnybrook the following Friday.
