Irish ref JP Doyle praised and panned in equal measure for how he dealt with Fiji v Uruguay

Where do you stand on the debate?

Some commended JP Doyle’s no-nonsense, letter-of-the-law approach to officiating when he took charge of Fiji v Uruguay on Tuesday evening.

Others felt that the Irish referee was perhaps too harsh in his card-happy, penalty-try-awarding game.

It was an ill-tempered match and, to be fair, Doyle did well to stamp out the scuffles that broke out late in the second half but it’s understandable that purists want to see the game flow as much as possible.
