Irish politician absolutely slates our World Cup bid in astonishing tirade

France will host the 2023 Rugby World Cup, not Ireland.

The news of Ireland’s world cup bid failure only compounded the misery felt by the nation after the football team’s dream of making it to Russia ended at the play-off stage.

Fine Fail senator Terry Leyden was so upset about how the bid was handled that he decided to go on an astonishing rant in the Seanad on Thursday.

“Crying over spilt milk at this stage as far as the Rugby World Cup because really, quite frankly, they made a bags of it. Let’s call a spade a spade. They hadn’t the ability to negotiate. The Taoiseach wasn’t able to negotiate. Senator Ross was more concerned about North Korea.”

Fine Gael senator Neale Richmond didn’t take too kindly to Leydon’s rant.

“What would you know, Terry? That’s a ridiculous comment. No, retract that! What did you contribute to it?”

At this point, Senator Richmond rose out of his seat to engage in a shouting match while the Cathaoirleach tried to restore some modicum of order. However, Leyden kept going.

“Tell you what, though, when we were in power we could negotiate world events…  wouldn’t lose the Scottish vote or I wouldn’t lose the Welsh vote. Where were they going? What kind of amateurs do they send out? Sure, they wouldn’t negotiate a piss-up in a brewery, for God’s sakes. Give me a break!”
