A poll undertaken by BT has discovered that 25% of fathers regularly opt for a sporting chant to get their offspring to drop anchor at blanket bay.
The research found that parents often sing songs with easy to remember lyrics. The top bedtime lullaby of all is ‘Ice Ice Baby’ by middle class rapper and eyebrow abuser Vanilla Ice [real name Robert van Winkle].
However, sporting chants and anthems are the go-to offerings of a quarter of all fathers surveyed, in Britain and Ireland.
The top sporting chant is ‘Ireland’s Call’. The Irish rugby anthem is 20 years old now and has a plodding, monotony that could well encourage a child to drift off.
Second on the podium is the English rugby song, ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’.
Rounding out the top three is ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, that great showtune made famous, in this neck of the woods, by Gerry and the Pacemakers and fans of Liverpool FC.
‘Put ‘Em Under Pressure’ does not feature and more’s the shame.
