The French jury have spoken, and it is not good news for Sean O’Brien.
In fairness to L’Equipe, the evidence against the Ireland flanker is pretty damning and the French sports paper are just reporting what they saw.
“Assault” is not a bad description of what O’Brien did to Pascal Pape during the first half and the Leinster back-row will be very fortunate to avoid a ban.
Our friends over at Google translate have helped us with the respected French organ’s account of the “altercation” and it is difficult to argue with them.
“After only 1’30 match between France and Ireland, in the decisive match of Group D to get first place in the group, Pascal Pape received care in midfield .
“The reason? He was assaulted by Sean O’Brien away from the ball, a punch in the stomach. A move that was not seen by the referee or the video slowed down, and that should be worth a big suspension Irish player .”
Merde.
