QUIZ: You have 60 seconds to answer one Premier League goalkeeper question

Patrick McCarry

They shared the goalkeeping load.

20 years ago, Arsenal had three goalkeepers that shared in a remarkable Premier League feat. Not one goalkeeper, nor two, but three.

On their way to beating Liverpool and Manchester United to the league title, the Gunners used three goalkeepers. One played 17 times, the other 12 and a third had nine starts.

Back in 2002, the Premier League required players to have made 10 appearances before they were considered eligible for a winners’ medal. With Arsenal leading Everton 4-3, in the final game of the league season, Arsene Wenger subbed off one goalkeeper for another.

That Wenger substitution ensured the Gunners would have three goalkeepers that would all end up with league winners’ medals.

We want you to name all three Arsenal goalkeepers, and we are giving you 60 seconds to do so. You may get one, or two, handy enough but it is not as simple as it may first seem.

Good luck!

Premier League relaxed medal rules

In 2012/13, the Premier League relaxed their eligibility requirements for games played, so back-up goalkeepers like Anders Lindegaard, Zack Steffen and Adrian all picked up winners’ medals.

No-one in Premier League history has, to date, matched the Gunners, though, in having three goalkeepers play 10 games over the course of a campaign.
