One for those who say racing drivers aren’t proper athletes
They might just be ‘going around in circles’ but the rigours of sitting behind the wheel of a stock car for hours travelling at speeds of up to 200mph take their toll on the human body, not least in terms of weight loss.
Nascar driver Landon Cassill decided to perform an experiment during yesterday’s Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, weighing himself before and after the race, as well as monitoring his fluid intake, to see exactly what the effects of the physical exertion and the sweltering heat would be.
The results showed net weight loss of eight pounds, or 3.6kg, but with Cassill taking on 7lbs of fluids during the race the overall figure is closer to 15lbs, or just under 7kg.
Science experiment! My pre race weight, I'm planning on taking in 80oz of fluids in the race, we'll see what I lose. pic.twitter.com/QJ0W071Yz3

Consumed 110oz fluids & 1100 calories->post race 147.4lbs. That's -15lbs, replaced 7 of it with fluids, net loss 8lbs pic.twitter.com/WsXq6rsvO0

That's a 10% gross loss of body weight, getting it back to 5% with fluid replacement. I think I'd like to see closer to 3%.
