Two WWE superstars are set to follow in the footsteps of CM Punk and swap the ring for the cage.
Bellator MMA, the biggest rival of the UFC, are apparently interested in signing the wrestling duo of Alberto Del Rio and, wait for it … Brock Lesnar.
The big names from the WWE are pay-per-view selling machines and Bellator are the latest mixed martial arts promotion to jump on board.
Alberto Del Rio (real name Jose Alberto Rodriguez) held a mixed martial arts record of 9-5 before joining the WWE in 2010 but is a legitimate fighter, finishing all of his wins (seven by submission and two by knockout).
In the professional wrestling arena, he played the role of an arrogant Mexican aristocrat and was one of Vince McMahon’s main men for a few years before being let go from the organisation earlier in August.
Bellator’s interest in Alberto Del Rio is the more immediate, with the promotion looking to wrap up a deal for the fighter as soon as possible.
The UFC’s competitor will have to wait until next year to sign Brock Lesnar who is contracted to the WWE until April.
Lesnar (5-3) also has legitimate MMA experience on the biggest stage of all, holding the UFC heavyweight championship for almost two years between 2008 and 2010.
It might come down to a bidding war between Bellator and the UFC to secure the services of Lesnar but it seems that the seeds have been sewn for more WWE superstars to make their way to the world of mixed martial arts in the near future.
