We know very little about the undercard of the Conor McGregor versus Floyd Mayweather Jr event but all should become clear in the coming days and weeks.
Gervonta Davis, Mayweather’s protogé, is expected to feature on the bill but, aside from that, MMA and boxing reporters are in the dark about the general make-up of the fight card. One person who would definitely add more Irish interest to the event is Michael Conlan.
The Belfast boxer, who takes on Jarrett Owen in Australia this weekend, has a close bond with McGregor and would be eager to fight on what would be a massive pay-per-view event.
Not content with being a featured fight on the undercard as of a Manny Pacquaio PPV, Conlan has made his play to be involved in the August 26 McGregor-Mayweather event, in Las Vegas. ‘The Notorious’ carried the Irish tricolour to the ring for Conlan’s professional debut, earlier this year.
In an interview with iFL TV, Conlan claimed Mayweather would never beat McGregor when it came to ‘shite talk’ but he would not be drawn on a prediction for the bout itself.
One thing is for sure, the former Olympic boxer would dearly love to be involved. He said:
“I’m excited. I wished him good luck. I asked him to get me on the show but I haven’t heard back from him, so I don’t think it’s going to happen.
“It’s crazy to think that he’s not even a boxer and he’s going to make the biggest boxing pay-day out of Floyd Mayweather, especially the biggest for a debut.”
If Conlan were to impress in front of nigh on 40,000 at SunCorp Stadium and go 3-0 in his pro career, it would definitely make his case to be involved in the August event at the T-Mobile Arena a lot stronger.
As for the fight itself, Conlan joked ‘it would be funny if [McGregor] threw a kick or something’.
