LISTEN: Audio of Jon Jones traffic stop reveals police gave him a huge break

Speed kills

Jon Jones is a lucky man.

It turns out that when police clocked arguably the greatest MMA fighter ever going 75 mph in a 35 mph zone recently, Jones didn’t have any proof of insurance, registration for the vehicle, or his driver’s license on him.

TMZ obtained audio from when police pulled Jones over, and the subsequent conversation between the officer and the fighter is almost unbelievable. Jones responded to every single one of the officer’s questions by claiming ignorance, even asking the cop at one point if it was illegal to drive without insurance.

When quizzed about not having his license, Jones claimed that he lost it a while ago and had been carrying his passport as a substitute, although he didn’t have that on him at the time either.

“I moved here officially about a year and a half ago and I’ve been driving around carrying my passport. I left my passport in my bookbag at home, so that’s the only reason I’m not carrying it.”

The police officer informed Jones that a passport is not an adequate replacement for a licence, which Jones also claimed he wasn’t aware of. He then let the former UFC light heavyweight champion off the hook, but gave him a stern telling off before sending him on his merry way.

“I mean going 75 is pretty much wreckless driving dude. So, you’re getting a huge break dude… Get a license to drive if you’re going to drive alright? And just drive normal ok? I mean yeah, you got a cool car but there’s no need to go drive crazy and kill somebody or kill yourself. It ain’t worth it dude.”
