Irish fight fans will definitely get behind John Kavanagh’s suggestion for August card

Just imagine this

John Kavanagh knows how to get fans excited.

As if Irish fight fans needed any more incentive to travel to Las Vegas to witness Conor McGregor’s momentous boxing debut against Floyd Mayweather, this would make the trip to Nevada something of a necessity.

Confirmation of McGregor vs. Mayweather arrived on Wednesday evening, with a date (August 26) and a venue (T-Mobile Arena) announced for what could well be the most anticipated sporting event of 2017.

The intricacies of the main event are clear. McGregor vs. Mayweather will fight at 154lbs, they will wear 10-ounce gloves, the bout will be 12 rounds, Showtime will broadcast it and Mayweather Promotions will promote it.

But what’s less obvious is the details of the undercard.

It’s been suggested that up-and-coming fighters from Mayweather’s stable will fill out the card, which needs no added publicity given the nature of the evening’s headliner.

UFC fighters did not hesitate to throw their names in the ring for similar MMA vs. boxing contests but that seems more like wishful thinking at this moment in time.

However McGregor’s head coach has a novel idea for the higher-ups in Mayweather Promotions when it comes to padding out the card.

John Kavanagh has suggested that the best of the best of Irish boxers should all play a part in the show.

On Thursday, Kavanagh took to Twitter to recommend that Katie Taylor, Michael Conlan, Paddy Barnes, Niall Kennedy, Gary O’Sullivan and Steve Ormond should be paired up with Mayweather’s fighters on August 26.

Barnes certainly seems open to the idea.

Get it done!
