Freddie Roach claims Mayweather asked him to train McGregor as “fight is going to happen”

The saga rumbles on

The fight is never going to happen!

I’d like to preface this piece with that as my name is attached to it and I know full well that it’s not even a possibility while Conor McGregor is contracted to the UFC.

But, according to esteemed boxing trainer Freddie Roach, Floyd Mayweather is supremely confident of getting a bout agreement with ‘The Notorious’ signed.

Roach, who has worked with Irish boxing legends like Steve Collins and Bernard Dunne in the past, claims that Mayweather approached him to urge Roach to train McGregor if the job was on the cards.

“Mayweather did come by my gym last week and he asked me to take that job if it’s offered to me, because he told me the fight is going to happen and we’re going to make a lot of money,” Roach told Inside MMA.

“I told Mayweather, it would take me three years at least to get him ready to fight you,” he continued. “I don’t think it’s really possible for a MMA fighter to fight a boxer. I don’t think it’s really fair. Mayweather would out-box him all day long. I mean Conor McGregor seems like a tough guy and all that, but being a tough guy doesn’t really help you in boxing.”

UFC 194: Aldo vs. McGregor

Both camps have publicly toyed with the idea of a cross-sport clash taking place but Roach is not too confident in McGregor’s chances to even take a round against Mayweather..

“Mayweather is the best boxer in the world and he would not even lose a round against a guy with Conor’s experience,” Roach said. “He looks like an okay boxer. He’s a very good MMA fighter, but this is boxing. He’s kind of a beginner at boxing.”

Roach has improved the striking games of mixed martial arts legends like Georges St-Pierre, Anderson Silva and Dan Hardy over the years and he revealed that he’d jump at the chance to help out the Dubliner.

“If I could help him, I would definitely do that. I work 12 hours a day in the gym, I like to stay busy,” he said. “I think we could help him, and if he came and asked, I would love to help him.”
