Whether Aldo’s rib is broken or bruised, Frankie Edgar definitely won’t be fighting at UFC 189.
The UFC released a statement on Wednesday confirming that Jose Aldo is fit to fight Conor McGregor at UFC 189, despite reports that he had broken his rib in training.
However, if Aldo is unable to fight McGregor in Vegas for whatever reason, Chad “Money” Mendes is waiting in the wings to step in for the champion and take on the Notorious for the interim featherweight title.
This came as somewhat of a surprise as the Mendes lost his championship fight with Aldo in Brazil last October. Many felt that Frankie Edgar, who’s just coming off a phenomenal win over Urijah Faber in Manila, should have gotten the nod to be Aldo’s back-up.
Edgar since revealed his disappointment at being snubbed in favour of Mendes on Twitter, but did so in perhaps the nicest and most mannerly way possible.
Disappointed I wasn't the stand by guy. Felt it should of been me, think a lot of you feel the same. Thanks for all the support.
