Eddie Alvarez isn’t a fan of the UFC reverting to its old weigh-in procedure.
In 15 years of professional fighting, Eddie Alvarez hasn’t missed weight once. That being said, he’s a big boy for a lightweight.
When he received the call to replace Tony Ferguson at UFC 223, ‘The Underground King’ weighed ‘every bit of 190lbs’. He starts his weight cut super early into his camp. So, it’s understandable why he would want an extra couple of hours to rehydrate after tipping the scales.
Once Dana White announced the UFC would be getting rid of the early weigh-ins they adopted in 2016, it was easy to predict how Alvarez was going to react.
Weight cutting's a huge problem https://t.co/PSIopZslMx

“If you miss weight, it’s your fucking fault”
The decision to change weigh-in times comes after a series of high-profile fighters missing weight. The likes of Darren Till, Mackenzie Dern, Yoel Romero and Kevin Lee have all missed weight under the new regime.
While Dana White claims the early weigh-ins ‘fucked everything up,’ some fighters believe it’s down to the fighters to ensure they hit their mark. Alvarez falls firmly into this camp. As he sees it, if you miss weight, it’s your own fault.
Early Weigh inns were the best thing to happen to this sport . You are either accountable or Not . Missing weight has nothing to do with the structure is has to do with the individual. 🤦♂️ #baddec #makeweight

Please bossman @danawhite don't get rid of the early Weigh inns. it won't solve a thing . Your punishing the fighters who are accountable and responsible. #dontdoit

Another day, another bunch of fighters left disgruntled about a decision they didn’t have a say in. If only they had some sort of unio…oh forget about it!
