British featherweight Mike Wilkinson cut by UFC just days before airing of MUTV documentary

Talk about timing

English mixed martial artist Mike Wilkinson has been released by the UFC.

In the latest roster revision by the promotion, Wilkinson joins the likes of Norman Parke and Jared Rosholt in somewhat surprising cuts by the UFC over the past seven days.

‘The Warrior’ put together a 2-2 UFC record since signing for the promotion in 2012 but his latest loss, a unanimous decision defeat at the hands of Makwan Amirkhani, has ended up being his last under the promotional banner, for the time being at least.

UFC Fight Night: Silva v Bisping

Wilkinson is significantly featured in a hotly-anticipated MUTV documentary called ‘Sporting Reds’ in which notable Manchester United fans are followed by a camera crew.

The documentary airs this week and catalogues the trials and tribulations in the life of a professional fighter.

It could be argued that this is a case of terrible timing considering the fact that Wilkinson is referred to as a ‘UFC star’ throughout the documentary which is now factually inaccurate but the 28-year-old is actually taking it as a positive.

“I think this is coming at the perfect time,” Wilkinson said on The MMA Hour. “This is gonna build my profile up.”

Here’s hoping that this isn’t the last we’ve seen of ‘The Warrior’ in the Octagon.
