Stats can prove anything, right?
A new detailed study has revealed that one-in-three comments about Conor McGregor on fan forums have been listed as either negative or offensive.
Or, if you’re a glass half-full kind of person, over 75% of all internet reaction to the UFC (interim) featherweight champion is positive in nature.
McGregor has emerged as one of the most polarising personalties in Ireland, with plenty of naysayers who sit alongside his thousands and thousands of supportive fans.
Those who doubt McGregor often cite his brash demeanour and arrogant remarks as the reason they are put off.
And often the doubters seem just as vocal as the fans on Twitter and elsewhere.
Digital Marketer Colin Oliver has put together a fascinating study on the Irish fighter, entitled ‘The social media rise of the Notorious Conor McGregor’.
Two takeaways from the piece include the Twitter breakdown of nationalities that mention McGregor, and the mix of positive and negative comments he receives.
Nationalities breakdown
Nearly 40% of all mentions of McGregor on Twitter come from the United States.
Obviously, there’s a much bigger population at play State-side but it’s still a significant portion of all mentions.
Positive vs. Negative comments
Over one-in-three comments about McGregor in online forums are negative.
But if you include blogs, forums, news and Twitter, 76% of mentions are favourable.
