The fall that saved bookies a fortune and cost punters an equal amount
With one to jump in the Mares’ Hurdle, bookies were in tears and punters were already high fiving each other. Annie Power, the red-hot favourite was romping home and an incredible four timer was about to land, bringing home countless Lucky 15s, accumulators and bets that have been on for the best part of 12 months.
Then Annie Power took off a fraction early going over the last, clipped it and ploughed into the Cheltenham turf.
The gasp when she fell was incredible and the bookies had their skins saved.
It was still a great day for the Irish, and another Mullins horse, Glen’s Melody won the Mares so he still had a four-timer from the first five races but that Annie Power fall will go down in Cheltenham folklore.
Thankfully horse and rider were none the worse for the bad looking fall, which is the main thing, but the finacial swing the fall caused may be the greatest in the history of racing.
