At long last one of the greatest horses in a generation is set to return to the racecourse
After over a year out of action due to a fibrillating heart condition, diagnosed after the Desert Orchid at Kempton in December 2013, it’s been confirmed that the Nicky Henderson mount Sprinter Sacre will return to action on Saturday at Ascot.
The nine-year-old had a run out at Newbury over Christmas with Barry Geraghty on board and all seemed to be well, with this Saturday’s Sodexo Clarence House Chase the setting for his long awaited return.
Geraghty told At the Races ‘He’s in good form, Nico (de Boinville) schooled him on Friday morning. I wasn’t there, but the reports were good.’
There had been fears last year that the horse may never get to race again after his major health problems and a whole year out of action, but Geraghty is confident the former Champion Chase winner at Cheltenham is almost back to his best ‘He looked well and he showed there he seems to be reasonably well in himself.’
Ground conditions may still mean that the horse could miss the comeback on Saturday with the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury on February 7 as a back-up due to Henderson’s concerns over heavy ground conditions in the coming days.
