Nicky Henderson will be hoping the ground doesn’t scupper the nine-year old

There isn’t a racing fan alive who doesn’t have a big smile on their race today with the news that Sprinter Sacre has been declared for Saturday’s Sodexo Clarence House Chase at Ascot.

Despite fears by Nicky Henderson that the soft ground at Ascot wouldn’t suit his prize mount he’s decided to challenge his horse against four others.

It’s believed that Henderson has declared based on Barry Geraghty walking the course earlier this week and declaring he was happy with the conditions for the trip.

It’s not going to be an easy return either for the champion horse who’ s been out of action since December 2013 with a heart problem.

Willie Mullins sends out Twinlight to challenge after success at Leopardstown while Tony McCoy will be eyeing up the prize aboard Somersby and Grey Gold by Richard Lee is also included. The biggest threat is likely to come from the Paul Nicholl’s trained Dodging Bullets, a Tingle Creek winner.

The going is soft and there is more rain forecast over the coming days which may cause a change of mind just before race day but for now we’re about to see the return of one of the most exciting racehorses in the world in just a few day’s time.
