We don’t think 34 year old’s should be retiring anyway.

One of the greatest jockey’s this country has ever produced has decided that he would like to continue with life as a working man and will be back in the saddle in 2015.

Spencer announced in August that he was quitting riding to work for Qatar Racing as a manager, famously being quoted as saying: “It doesn’t matter how rich you are if you go to bed unhappy.

The former champion jockey was believed to hung up his whip after coming seventh in the Hong Kong Mile on Sunday morning.

But in a surprise move, he released a statement to say that he would not be taking up the role with Qatar, and would be a freelance rider next year:

‘Sheikh Fahad and Qatar Racing offered me a wonderful opportunity to become part of their management team but, after much reflection, I have decided that at this stage in my life I am not going to accept it. I will be riding primarily as a freelance, but obviously I have certain existing links and relationships with trainers that I will be utilising. I am also looking forward to being entirely free and available for the first time in six seasons and developing new associations. I have no specific targets other than to continue to be successful.’

It should be interesting which Irish stables take a punt on the two-time former champion jockey now he’s free to take up offers wherever he wants.
