Golden Horn follows in hoofmarks of one of the greatest horses of all time

Frankie's a happy man

What’s the plural of wonderhorse?

The best three-year old in the the world has just taken another racing accolade after being given the same handicap rating as possibly one of the finest horses of all time.

Golden Horn completed an incredible treble last week by adding the Eclipse to the Dante and Derby titles already achieved this season.

John Gosden’s mount looks to have a perfect blend of pace and staying power, and we’re already looking forward to what the horse might achieve in the coming years.

But if he is to break records in the style of some of the greats of the past then it will have to do so with a massive rating of 130.

The same rating given to the unstoppable Frankel.

Until today, Frankel was the only horse to achieve the rating since 1996. Now Golden Horn has joined him at that mark, after the decision by Phil Smith, the head of the British Horseracing Authority’s handicapping to raised the weight.

Smith explained his decision to reward the horse  by pushing up the weight by 4lb this morning

“I would be disappointed if Golden Horn cannot go on and prove himself better than 130 as the season progresses as he is clearly a fast improving colt who on Saturday showed his versatility by making the running for the first time.”

“If agreed by the International Handicappers this week, it will make Golden Horn the highest-rated horse in the world so far this year.

“Life will become harder for Golden Horn as the three-year-old weight-for-age allowance reduces by 2lb per month across each distance as the season progresses, but I have little doubt that he will be able to take that in his stride and continue to show that he is equally effective at 10 furlongs and 12 furlongs.”
