Barry Geraghty plays down Sign Of A Victory’s Cheltenham hopes

Jockey plays down Champion Hurdle hopes for Sign Of A Victory

Gareth Makim

Barry Geraghty is a man who knows what it takes to win at Cheltenham.

But the Meathman is playing down the chances of Champion Hurdle success aboard Sign Of A Victory, despite the impressive nature of the five-year-old’s victory in the William Hill Handicap Hurdle at Ascot at the weekend.

Nicky Henderson’s charge is in action again at Prestbury Park next Sunday, but Geraghty remains unconvinced he has a contender for the Festival showpiece in March just yet.

‘He couldn’t have won the listed two mile handicap hurdle much easier although talk of the Champion Hurdle seem a long way off at the moment,’ the jockey wrote in his At The Races blog. ‘Don’t get me wrong, he is a lovely horse and Nicky will bring out his potential but that’s a massive leap. All we know about him at the moment is that he’s a horse that has pace under the right conditions.’
