It just wasn’t meant to be for Rory McIlroy in Boston on Sunday.
The former world number one finished his third round at the Deutsche Bank Open in spectacular fashion, but man, he was so damn close to pulling off one of the shots of the year.
On the 18th hole McIlroy found himself on the fairway, 210 yards away from the pin. He absolutely walloped a shot that found home on the green and looked like it was heading straight into the cup.
Unfortunately, the ball just had too much momentum on it and it clipped the edge of the hole, shifting its trajectory as it sailed away from the flag. Just a little bit less speed and that bad boy might have fallen in, but alas, it just wasn’t written in the stars for the Hollywood native.
You could tell by McIlroy’s strained reaction that he knew just how close he came to pulling off a legitimate wondershot. However, he made do with an eagle instead of an albatross on the par 5.
Rory McIlroy … 210 yards … for albatross …
Incredible. https://t.co/lZwfDtL46c
