VIDEO: Ever wondered what the dimples on golf balls are for? We’ve got the answers

Golf nerdery at its finest

How important are those little indents on indents on a golf ball? It turns out, very.

Titleist put on an experiment to display what would happen if the dimples were removed from either side of the golf ball and how the ball would travel if they were removed altogether.

The dimples are there to help the golf ball lift and, without them, the ball would be near-impossible to hit straight, similar to the way a knuckleball travels through the air.

This is what it looks like when you hit a golf ball with no dimples on the right hand side of the ball.

This is what it looks like when you hit a golf ball with no dimples on the left hand side of the ball.

This is what it looks like when you hit a golf ball with no dimples whatsoever, mental stuff.
