Still packs a punch
Quite simply it is the great chip shot in the history of the Masters. Possibly in the history of golf.
It’s also the kind of iconic moment that you think doesn’t happen in sport anymore. Watching it back it almost feels tinged in Technicolor. A moment from a different era, not merely 2005.
It’s hard to point out what makes it so special. Obviously the shot itself is so impossibly brilliant that even now, 10 years on, it’s hard to comprehend how he did it.
Then there’s Tiger’s lofted arm in celebration followed by that moment of intense anxiety as he wonders if it will finally drop.
Then there’s the shrill of the crowd, stripped of that forced ‘get in the hole’ nonsense that’s part and parcel with almost all golf tournaments these days. It’s a moment where the crowd loses all self-consciousness and just enjoys a great sporting moment.
Wonderful accounts of this shot alone have been recorded. If Norman Mailer was still in his pomp when it happened whole novels would probably be written around it.
But now, 10 years on, we can still sit back and enjoy an incredible moment.
