We never would have guessed that Shane Lowry’s sporting hero is this GAA legend

Shane Lowry is a fascinating individual.

The more we learn about the Offaly golfer, the more we want to know and he added to his intrigue recently when he named a Kerry legend as his current sporting hero.

One would have expected Lowry to pick someone from his own field – a Tiger Woods or a Rory McIlroy perhaps – but Lowry is a proud GAA man and had to give Colm Cooper his due.

During an eye-opening quickfire question and answer session for the Irish Golf Expo, Lowry revealed that while legendary Offaly hurler Johnny Dooley is his favourite sporting hero of all time, ‘Gooch’ is the man from whom he gets most motivation nowadays.

“I suppose Johnny Dooley, who was a hurler, but now I would say ‘Gooch’ Cooper. I admire him a lot,” Lowry revealed.

Lowry, who endeared himself to fans at the Phoenix Open by handing out cans of Guinness on the 16th hole on Saturday, is a huge fan of Cooper and will have been delighted at the news that the five-time All-Ireland winning footballer intended to hang around for another year.

We don’t think he’s too shabby either.
