WATCH: Oisin McConville whips up the most Irish meal possible on Celebrity Masterchef

Straight outta Crossmaglen

Conan Doherty

The feast of kings.

This isn’t exactly an exclusive reveal into the diet of an All-Ireland champion, but it’s nice to know that All-Ireland champions indulge as much as the lay people.

South Armagh is proud of its heritage and its tradition. Crossmaglen is steeped in the culture of Irish history and a lot of their success was brought about in the face of British occupation.

In the words of one of their finest: “F**k you, we’re going to win an All-Ireland anyway.”

It’s been a change of pace of late for the Armagh legend who scored the goal in the 2002 All-Ireland final against Kerry.

McConville is enjoying a successful media career and he’s made the transition from player to manager of Crossmaglen. Through it all though, he’s remained true to what makes him – and that’s just a good old-fashioned Irish plate of dinner.

The former iconic number 12 is on Celebrity Masterchef and, after three weeks of training, he impressed the judges with his serving.

  • Pan-fried fillet steak
  • Pepper sauce
  • Chunky chips
  • Parsnips
  • Carrots

What else?

The experts came in to run their taste buds over it though and the consensus was that the sauce was too thick – then too hot – and that the vegetables were raw.

But then they were raving about the steak.

“For someone who’s been cooking three weeks, this is an amazing plate of food.”

Ah, here, they’ve been knocking those dishes back in Crossmaglen since time began.
