Wexford clinched a piece of silverware in unprecedented circumstances after edging Kilkenny in a frees shoot-out in the Bord Na Móna Walsh Cup senior hurling final at Nowlan Park.
After drawing 1-24 each at the end of extra time, Wexford won the shoot-out 3-2.
With the Walsh Cup final ending level, at 1-21 to 1-21, in regulation extra time beckoned. The sides could still not be separated and, with the match ending 1-24 apiece, it had to be decided by a free-taking shootout.
This was the first time in the GAA’s history that the Walsh Cup would be decided by such a shoot-out and followed on from a similar tie-breaker in the Meath and Longford football game last weekend.
