He’s been there, he’s done it.
He’s come back and conquered all over again.
Don’t ever question Brian Cody. Ever. Don’t say anything negative about a man who won five All-Irelands as a player with club and county and captained Kilkenny to one back in 1982 as well.
Don’t even think of raising a strand of hair on your eyebrow about a boss who’s guided the county to 11 Liam McCarthys since.
But players take small mercies where they find them and they enjoy little victories along the way no matter if they’ve reached the very top themselves.
For 19 years now, Cats legends have come and gone with the words of Cody bellowing in their ears. Throughout those highs and lows, he’s probably drilled them, whipped them when he had to and produced the hairdryer if it was necessary. He was probably pretty sound and inspirational for the most part but it’s the ruthlessness that players remember most.
David Herity was a hell of a servant for Kilkenny for over a decade.
But even he took a little joy in Brian Cody’s first touch failing him during the week during the visit of Prince Charles to Kilkenny.

What’s the old classic for managers? Do as I say, not as I do.
In fairness, whatever they’re doing, it’s serving all of them alright anyway.
