VIDEO: Stephen Hunt discusses whether or not a GAA player could make it as a professional

The big debate

Conan Doherty

“They are elite in what they do, they probably train just as much as us… but they have to work.”

Stephen Hunt took a bit of stick from the GAA community way back in November when he stated that the amateurs of our game would find life tough in the Premier League.

It would still require a big lifestyle change but the Ipswich winger has been thinking about it since and he admits that he could see a day when GAA players are training professionally – and how they’d reap the rewards of it.

In a new RTÉ documentary, Páirc Life, both Hunt and Mick McCarthy compare the work of soccer professionals to our own footballers and hurlers in Ireland and Hunt even goes as far to claim that those Irish men and women are ‘gods’.

The former Ireland wide man shows us his ridiculous jersey collection as well as talking about the character and history that makes GAA players the heroes that they are.

The show airs on Tuesday with Magic Mick featuring prominently, too.
