VIDEO: Michael Murphy and Darren McCurry battle for the title of most ‘you knows’ said in an interview

Forget about Sunday, this is where the real battle takes place.

We love a good modest GAA interview and we love it even more with a northern twang.

Tyrone and Donegal are preparing for a monstrous first round clash to get the Ulster championship off to a rip-roaring start this summer but two of their threatening forwards have already been throwing down off the field in a battle of the ‘you knows’.

Ulster GAA have produced this brilliant video as a teasing preview ahead of the giant game in Ballybofey but we couldn’t help but notice one or two things.

Or 43.

That’s right, in a three-minute video, both Darren McCurry and Michael Murphy speak the words ‘you know’ or ‘ye know’ or ‘y’no’ a total of 43 times between them.

Here are some examples.

Michael Murphy
(00:38 – 00:50)

“It’s a huge challenge coming into this game against Tyrone, you know, who are going to be coming in, you know, with extreme confidence. They’re going to be coming in, you know, with, you know, something to prove like ourselves, you know.”

Darren McCurry
(00:50 – 01:08)

“It’s been a tough year, you know, relegated to Division Two, you know. It was tough. It was disappointing, you know, and then Mickey getting sick, you know, you know, Mickey’s a big driving force in the whole thing, you know. But, you know, the last couple of weeks training have been good, you know.”

We know what you’re thinking, this is going to go right down to the wire.

But it was the sharpshooter of Tyrone who wanted it more and really went for it once he got into his stride.

Darren McCurry
(01:09 – 01:18)

“Sean’s back now, you know, and Mickey’s back to full health, you know, so training’s been good, you know, but, you know, we still know that there’s a massive task ahead now.”

And McCurry never looked back as he raced home with a whopping 33 ‘you knows’ to completely humiliate his opposite number from Donegal with a landslide victory.

Darren McCurry
(01:45 – 01:57)

“We’ve played Donegal now, you know, a lot of times in the Ulster championship, you know, but you have to realise that Donegal are a top team, you know, so, you know, they’re not easily broke down, you know, they have some very good players, you know.”

There’s plenty of more where that came from.

It’s the sort of thing their team mates have probably already picked up on a lot quicker than we could have and we can just imagine, you know, the ammunition some of them are gathering for changing room banter.

We’ll say this, at least the two boys are single-handedly wiping out the era of ‘lookit’. And, for that, we thank them.
