VIDEO: Anna Geary makes The Toughest journey of all for the love of Milford camogie

Going the extra mile

Kevin McGillicuddy

The Toughest journey begins with a single step.

For Anna Geary, the now retired Cork camogie captain and long-serving Milford club servant, the quest for another All-Ireland title goes on.

Twice a week the camogie legend takes her body, marked with scars from previous club campaigns with the Munster champions, from Dublin to Cork on a six-hour marathon all for the love of the game and her parish.

Straight from work, the camogie legend has no time to waste as she embarks on a quest familiar to thousands of club players across the country.

She could easily say no, she has her All-Ireland medals, she’s now living far from home and her knee, racked with tendinitis, screams at her to rest and recover.

But Geary knows that the pain in her knee tells her just one thing: keep going.

When she is on the field she gets to meet friends and family, she’s part of the greatest thing in her life, the one thing that can make every sacrifice worth it: the chance of walking out in Croke Park for an All-Ireland final.

As Anna explains herself: “There’s too much invested in it now to give up”.

Milford face the defending champions Oulart-The Ballagh this Sunday in the All-Ireland semi-final, and Anna would be willing to travel for 24 hours if it meant the club would enjoy March success.

This is not just Geary’s story of sacrifice, of dedication, and of the hundreds of lonely miles between Dublin and the Cork/Limerick border.

This is a story of every club player, of every club, of The Toughest journey everyone takes on the road to the greatest glory.
