Tipperary had stormed to their third victory in succession and the county’s assault of Liam MacCarthy was announced.
Cork, Waterford and Clare were cast aside by the Premier county but as the stadium had emptied, the players were showering and the media dispensing, a group of unused Tips subs were getting something from the day in the form of sprints.
One of the coaches was running the drills but, in the middle of it all, a figure appeared from the tunnel. In a t-shirt.
Liam Sheedy reemerged to encourage the rest of them who were going through all that for the cause. And Lar Corbett saw it all.
“The subs were out with the physical trainer and they were doing the runs in the lashings of rain,” he explained.
“Liam Sheedy was in the middle of them shouting the guys on. I stayed in the stand for 10 minutes because I didn’t want to get wet going out in the car.Â
“The hair stood in the back of my neck because this is the Liam Sheedy I know.
“He knows, somewhere through the rest of this year, he’s going to need those guys. He knows how important they are.”
Throughout the second episode of Corbett & McGrath’s Big Build-Up, the Tipperary legend explained more of the man-management powers of Sheedy whilst McGrath analysed the movement of the team and how Sheedy and O’Shea have allowed the players to become more versatile.
