Wooly hats off to Caitriona Perry for showing that even a few thousands miles away from home, the humble hurl has many many uses.
The RTE reporter is based in Washington and the east coast of America is currently in the midst of a massive deep freeze that has seen inches and inches of snow hit various states.
Big freezes aren’t that uncommon, but it can sometimes be hard to tell exactly how much snow and slush you may have to try and battle through to get to work.
But Ms Perry has found a brilliant way to find out exactly how much of the snowy white powder has her trapped in her home thanks to a humble piece of ash.
This is what was outside my front door this morning. For scale, that's the top of a 34" hurley.#blizzard2016 @rtenews pic.twitter.com/NuRhDQSOx8

Genuis.
We reckon that there is probably two and bit inches off the bottom of the hurl, so that’s a hell of a lot of snow in an event being called Snowmaggedon on Twitter.
Perry has also explained now why she used a hurl.
Didn't have a ruler big enough! @LenoxConsulting @GlobalIrish @IrishNetworkUSA @rte @rtenews

@KevinHickie @LouiseByrneNews @rtenews I put it there when I opened the front door to demonstrate the depth of the snow!
