PIC: Fantastic sportsmanship in defeat shown by father and son in Ulster GAA colleges game

Worth a thousand words

Kevin McGillicuddy

Sport is not always about winning.

Sometimes as a sportsman, or even just as a fan, you have to accept that the better team wins and wish them well.

However it takes a big personality to be able to show that in the minutes after a defeat, but a wonderful picture from a weekend college’s game in Ulster has proved that fathers sometimes do know best.

On Saturday rivals St Ronan’s Lurgan took on the provincial kingpins St Colman’s Newry in the MacRory cup quarter final in Burren.

The new school pulled off a shock, as they beat Colman’s by 1-13 to 1-10 after a stunning comeback to seal their place in the last four of the premier senior colleges football competition

After the game however local photographer Brendan Monaghan captured a moment that encapsulates not only what is great about the GAA, but also sport itself.

The St Colman’s captain Charlie Carr was obviously devastated by the result, but thanks to his father’s gentle encouragement, he showed he was a proper gentleman, and sportsman, as he spoke to the victorious winning squad.
