“No one here has ever been inside a county dressing room.”
Former Offaly hurler and current county board chairman Michael Duignan has took to social media to hit back at online trolls who were criticising his county’s performance at the weekend.
Offaly surrendered an eight point lead to eventually lose against Clare in the Allianz National League, and there were certain sections of the fans, online at least, who were disgusted at the result.
Offaly’s official ‘X’ account posted the full time result following the game, along with the message “hard luck lads” – obviously referring to the fact that they only lost the game by a single point.
However, comments under the post from sections of the fanbase wanted to have their voices heard.
One user said “No hard luck there, you can’t be winning by 8 points and then throw it away,” while another went a step further by claiming that “they are useless”.
This theme of disgust was echoed by another user who claimed that it was “a lack of bootle more like. God that second half was embarrassing.”
Duignan had clearly had enough and reposted Offaly’s original tweet with a message of his own.
“Thanks lads for your comments. No one here has ever been inside a county dressing room. You have no idea what these players do for their county. All of you should be very ashamed.”

Duignan’s post was met with much more supportive comments, with one coming from Peter Leahy, who once managed the Ladies Mayo Football team.
“Well said Michael I just had this same argument with some Kildare fair weather supporters. Unless you have been in a dressing room as a player or coach, refrain from derogative, ill informed statements.
“Great support as a chairperson, well done Michael.”
